Abdominoplasty

It is important to remember that surgical reduction of the stomach area is not an appropriate way to lose weight. This procedure usually applies to patients who due to significant weight reduction or after multiple pregnancies are left with skin which does not return to a normal shape. Female patients often are left with ugly scars following caesarian births which can also be removed. This procedure is often combined with liposuction (see specific link).

The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and depending on the nature of the procedure used, patients may be required to stay overnight.

The scope of the surgery varies from just removal of excess skin to navel repositioning and muscle retightening surgery.

Abdominoplasty complications, in addition to the complications associated with general surgery, are so-called post abdominoplasty seromas which are collections of wound fluids directly under the skin. This can be rectified by removing the fluids with a syringe as often as required during the weeks following the operation.

Convalescence periods vary depending on the occupation of the patient but are usually approximately three weeks. It is advisable to refrain from strenuous physical exercise for an additional week.
