Rhinoplasty
The size and shape of the nose is very important for the appearance of most individuals. Therefore it is vital to discus in depth patient expectations and requirements prior to surgery. The nose can appear in a multitude of different forms and shapes depending upon genetic factors, ethnicity, etc and the appearance of the nose may be disfigured following accidents. During the consultation it should be decided which rhinoplasty components are of importance in this specific case. This may be the reduction of a lump on the bridge of the nose, the reduction or addition of cartilage and bone tissues to create a straighter nose or just an improved nose contour.
Rhinoplasty procedures are usually performed under a general anaesthetic using an incision just inside the nostrils and sometimes also combined with an incision in the dividing wall found between the nostrils. Following this the nose cartilage and bone tissues are corrected according to the original surgical plan. Finally tape is applied to the nose and even plaster of Paris may be used on occasions. The patient returns home after just a few hours. One week after surgery the bandaging is removed as are any stitches used. Mild swelling of the area may remain for up to several months largely dependent on the quality of the patient`s skin. Post surgery pain is usually mild and disappears after a short time but the ability to breath and smell is not usually affected.
Patients usually remain at home for one to two weeks following this procedure.
